Description: INTERNATIONAL BUYERS:💠The shipping rates shown are for '1st Class International Package' with tracking.💠Ebay is also promoting their EIS International Shipping program on sellers pages. I do not use this program because it is more expensive, slower, not very transparent, and frustrating to the buyer, if something goes wrong. Do not select it, if ebay does show it as an option. Narrative: The bagpipe is a primitive instrument. In the mountains of Calabria and the Roman Campagna the piflerari, or pipers, are a picturesque race, well known to us by the pictures of Eastlake and others; the wild shepherds of Auvergne are sometimes seen in the streets of London; but Scotland appears to be the paradise of pipers; for there they form part of the state of the old aristocracy; their wild and stirring notes are called for in war, to thrill through and inspire the Scottish soldier; and no less indispensable are they at wake, and fair, and merrymaking. With this we can well understand the sayings, "As proud as a piper," and "As drunk as a piper;" both one and the other are natural, and to be expected. A more gallant figure than one of the domestic pipers, retained in the old families, whose ofiice it is to play in state before the house on grand occasions, it would be difiicult to imagine; and clad in the tartan of his clan, ornamented with pouch, and dirk, and plumed bonnet, he inarches erect, and conscious to the full of his honourable position. Wilkie has given us a right merry and characteristic specimen; he has touched to the life the rich and racy physiognomy of an undeniably jovial old soul; a careless wanderer in the open air, over heath and moor; and one at home in village and solitary farm; familiar with every strath and nook the country round; with an eye full of humour, yet capable of kindling with deeper expression; proud of his ability, with the magic of his rude instrument, to waken sad or merry feelings in the national heart; an universal favourite, and a good companion, and made free of the oatcake and brose, and the whisky too, which he will drink till he reels again. All this we think we can read in the life-like impersonation before us, which is painted to a touch, con amore, by the hand of a perfect master. To the Scottish people Wilkie must be peculiarly dear, for he may be called their painter of life and manners; and universally interesting as are his works, they contain a variety of traits so peculiarly national, as only, perhaps, to be fully appreciated in the land which originated them. Allan Cunningham observes, with justice, that he was confessedly less happy in his representations of English character and habits, with which he was not so intimately acquainted, and which, perhaps, in the present day, do not present among the lower classes so much scope for lively and varied exhibitions of art. The racy, truthful picture of " The Piper" is one which will bear out these remarks; it breathes the very air of Scotia, and must fill with delight her sons, whether at home or afar.
