Description: ANTIQUE RARE ART NOUVEAU BACCARAT 'HYALITH' BLACK GLASS VASE BOHEMIAN CZECH RINDSKOPF QUATREFOIL JAPONISME / ASIAN MOTIF @ 1890-1920 (THIS AUCTION IS FOR THE BLACK VASE ONLY. THE CAMEO POINSETTIA VASE IS SHOWN FOR COMPARISON ONLY, LAST 5 PHOTOS.) THIS RARE EXAMPLE OF FRENCH BOHEMIAN HYALITH (BLACK OPAQUE) GLASS MEASURES APPROX. 6" HIGH, 5" WIDE AND 4" DEEP. IT IS HAND BLOWN & CARVED, (GROUND, ACID ETCHED), WITH A FLORAL ASIAN MOTIF, AND ONE CHARACTER THAT MAY BE JAPANESE, OR SIMPLY A CHARACTER FOR DESIGN. THIS CAME TO ME FROM FRANCE AND I CONSIDER IT TO BE BY MAISON BACCARAT.I OFFER MY RESEARCH BELOW, TO HELP YOU DECIDE FOR YOURSELF. ACCORDING TO 'BOHEMIAN GLASS . ORG' , THIS IS POSSIBLY RINDSKOPF HYALITH GLASS.A TRANSLATION OF THE CZECH DESCRIPTION SAYS THIS COULD ALSO POSSIBLY BE BY KRALIK, OR OTHER CZECH GLASSWORKS, HARRACH, AKA HARRACHOV, OR RIEDEL. THE EXAMPLE POSTED ON THAT SITE IS NOT ETCHED LIKE THIS PIECE, BUT THE 4 PANELED LOBE SHAPE IS THE SAME. THIS QUATREFOIL SHAPE, WELL DOCUMENTED TO HAVE BEEN USED BY RINDSKOPF IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT DECORS, INCLUDING DILUVIUM GLASS, WAS ALSO USED BY BACCARAT, IN A HIGHLY RECOGNIZABLE 2-TONE POINSETTIA ACID / CAMEO MOTIF, (Jean-Luis Curtis: Baccarat, p. 261). IN THE CASE OF RINDSKOPFS' DILUVIUM EXAMPLE IN THIS SHAPE VASE,...WHICH CAN BE FOUND ON GOOGLE BY ENTERING 'RINDSKOPF DILUVIUM VASE'...THE POINSETTIA IS CLEARLY CARVED INTO THE VASE, SUGGESTING THAT EITHER, 1) A MOULD WITH THE POINSETTIA CAME FROM BACCARAT, INTO WHICH RINDSKOPF POURED THE DILUVIUM MOLTEN GLASS.2) OR RINDSKOPF ACID ETCHED A POINSETTIA INTO THE FRONT OF HIS CREATION, ONCE IT WAS COOLED. I THINK THE FORMER MAKES MORE SENSE, AND I AM UNAWARE OF ANY ACID ETCHED PIECES DOCUMENTED/ATTRIBUTED TO RINDSKOPF. IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED BY ONE COLLECTOR ON COLLECTOR WEEKLY, WHO COMPARES/CONTRASTS 4 VARYING DECORS OF THE SAME MODEL VASE IN HIS COLLECTION, THAT THIS STYLE VASE MAY ALSO HAVE BEEN PRODUCED BY HARRACH, RIEDEL, BACCARAT, ST. LOUIS, OR LEGRAS.(HE MENTIONS BUQUOY, (1781-1851), OF SOUTHERN BOHEMIA, AND INVENTOR OF HYALITH GLASS, AS A POSSIBLE MAKER OF THE BLACK VASE HE PRESENTS, BUT DID NOT THINK IT IS LIKELY IN HIS CASE.) WE KNOW THAT RINDSKOPF AND BACCARAT USED THIS SAME MODEL, WHICH BEGS THE QUESTION, DID THEY EXCHANGE 'BLANKS', (AS WE KNOW LOETZ AND MOSER DID, FOR EXAMPLE). WE COULD INFER THAT THIS IS BY RINDSKOPF, BECAUSE THAT SEEMS TO BE THE MOST LIKELY MAKER, BASED ON SEVERAL VARIETIES USING THIS SHAPE, KNOWN TO HAVE BEEN PRODUCED BY RINDSKOPF, BUT, WE ALSO KNOW THAT BACCARAT USED THIS SAME LOBED SHAPE, IN SEVERAL VERSIONS: CLEAR GLASS OR PALE YELLOW-GREEN ON THE BASE, WITH AN ACID ETCHED RED OR BLACK POINTSETTIA DECOR. IT IS ALSO KNOWN IN A TALLER VERSION, BY BACCARAT, WITH A LIGHT BLUE ACID BACKGROUND AND CAMEO BLACK IRIS DECOR. NOT ONLY IS THIS VASE A BIT OF A 'UNICORN', IN THAT WE HAVE NOT SEEN ANOTHER LIKE IT, AND IT'S POSSIBLE WE NEVER WILL, BUT THE BLACK HYALITH GLASS EXAMPLES OF BACCARATS ART NOUVEAU / ART DECO PERIOD, ARE VERY FEW, AND FAR BETWEEN. I GIVE YOU THIS TO CONSIDER: AS THIS PIECE CAME TO ME FROM FRANCE, IT IS MORE THAN LIKELY BLACK 'HYALITH' BY BACCARAT, WHICH WOULD NOT NECESSARILY HAVE BEEN STAMPED/MARKED AT THE TIME, BUT LIKELY CAME WITH A GOLD STICKER OF THE ERA.IT IS WELL DOCUMENTED THAT: 1) BACCARAT DID CAMEO WORK ON THIS SHAPE,2) DID DEEP GROUND LINES ON SMOOTH BLACK GLASS DURING THE TURN OF THE CENTURY AND ART DECO ERA,3) DID WORK WITH HYALITH / BLACK OPAQUE GLASS, 4) AS WELL AS PRODUCE MANY PIECES IN THE JAPONISME / JAPONISANTE STYLE OF THE 1890-1910's.5) I CANNOT FIND ANY EXAMPLE OF A RINDSKOPF PIECE IN THIS SHAPE, (OR ANY SHAPE), THAT HAS BEEN GROUND/ACID ETCHED, IN ANY WAY RESEMBLING THIS VASE. THE ACID / GROUND-WORK STRIKES ME AS VERY REPRESENTATIVE OF BACCARATS TECHNIQUE, BASED ON OTHER BLACK BACCARAT VASES AND PERFUME BOTTLES I HAVE SEEN FROM THAT ERA. I COMPARED THE ACID WORK TO THAT ON A 1926 BLACK BACCARAT SILKA PERFUME BOTTLE, AND IT WAS NEARLY IDENTICAL, RE THE MATTE, WHITE-GRAY SURFACE AREA INSIDE THE CARVED DESIGNS, WHICH WAS VERY SIMILAR, IF NOT THE SAME TECHNIQUE, TO THE SAME 'CARVED-FROSTED' ACID WORK ON THIS HYALITH VASE LISTING.FOR REFERENCE, THAT BLACK SILKA PERFUME BOTTLE, FROM 1926, SOLD IN MAY 2021, FOR $4000.00, THROUGH LIVE AUCTIONEERS. IT COMPARES EQUALLY WELL WITH THE ACID ETCHED / GROUND DECOR OF A 1924 BACCARAT GRENOVILLE BYZANCE PERFUME BOTTLE, SOLD FOR $1,300.00, IN MAY OF 2015, ALSO THROUGH THE AFOREMENTIONED AUCTION SITE. I ALSO COMPARED THIS VASE TO A BLACK BACCARAT VASE @ 1920, THAT HAD IT'S ORIGINAL GOLD LABEL FROM BACCARAT, AND VERY SIMILAR ACID WORK TO THIS PIECE, CONFIRMING FOR ME THAT THIS IS BY BACCARAT. I LEAVE IT TO YOU TO MAKE YOUR OWN ASSESSMENT, AND HOPE THAT YOU AGREE. I WELCOME YOUR COMMENTS AND OPINIONS ON THIS RARE AND SOMEWHAT ENIGMATIC PIECE. THE BLACK GLASS IS OPAQUE.NO CHIPS OR CRACKS.THE CONDITION IS EXCELLENT, W/ MINOR AGE RELATED SCRATCHES.THE PONTIL IS POLISHED W/ MINOR AGE RELATED SCRATCHES ON THE BOTTOM.THE ASIAN MOTIF IS DEEPLY ACID ETCHED / GROUND / CARVED. * PAYMENT IS REQUIRED WITHIN 3 DAYS OF PURCHASE/END OF AUCTION.* I ACCEPT PAYPAL ONLY.* I DO NOT SHIP INTERNATIONALLY AT THIS TIME.* I SHIP USPS PRIORITY, INSURED.* SIGNATURE IS REQUIRED AT TIME OF DELIVERY. 1) ALL ITEMS ARE SOLD 'AS IS' AND SALE IS FINAL. 2) REFUNDS ARE ONLY CONSIDERED IN THE EVENT THAT AN ITEM HAS BEEN GROSSLY MISREPRESENTED. 3) PLEASE DON'T HESITATE TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE, AND REVIEW THE PHOTOS FOR DESCRIPTION.
