Every year starting in 1979, needleworkers from all over the world submitted entries to Nordic Needle for this award issue.Some designs were the traditional geometric patterns. Others were less traditional with flowers and houses and more.The winner and honorable mention designs were published to great acclaim. Many stitchers won more than one year.All the designs are gorgeous. "The contest has welcomed and acknowledged through its publication stitchers from all over the world, many of whom have since become successful independent designers or authors." The early books had a short bio and a black and white photo of the winner, a black and white photo of the finished piece, and a black and white enlarged photo of the piece - enough to stitch it if you knew how to stitch Hardanger. In the beginning, the winners' addresses were published. At some point, they stopped doing that.The later books had a short bio and color photo of the winner, color photo of the finished piece, a color enlarged photo of the piece, and enough of a master graph to stitch the piece. Finished sizes and materials required were also always included.None of the books have directions on Hardanger stitches. It was assumed you knew how to do that.In fact from the 2017 booklet - "This publication contains advance Hardanger designs. It is assumed that you are an experienced Hardanger stitcher and should be able to work from photographs and partial charts."At some point, Yvette Stanton started doing the charts. She is a noted international designer and author. From the booklets - 1979 - "Ninety-five women from all the United States and Canada entered their work, from which 22 winners were selected. Prizes awarded were: Grand Champion, Second Place, Third Place and 19 Honorable Mentions."Marie Larson was the Grand Champion and she went on to publish many beautiful patterns. 1994 - "We were pleased to receive entries form some foreign countries this year as well as from all over the United States." 6 First Place awards were given for stitchers from North Dakota, Oregon, Minnesota, Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.5 Honorable Mention awards were given for stitchers from Ontario Canada, 2 from Minnesota, Oregon, and Vermont. 2017 - "This year we received nearly two dozen entries from all over the world, including Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, and the United States. As always, the designs were judged on originality, workmanship, composition, and attractiveness. There are six first-place winners and four honorable mentions."6 First Place awards were given for stitchers from Japan (3), California, Quebec Canada, and Minnesota.4 Honorable Mention awards were given for stitchers from Alberta Canada, Christchurch New Zealand, Athens Greece, and Minnesota.
