Description: I am offering two extraordinarily rare vintage original photos of Col. Clarence M. Young, a famous aviation pioneer, posed wearing full aviation gear in the cockpit of an airplane that looks to me vintage just after World War I. These photos are of historic importance and come from Clarence M. Young's estate. Each photo measures 11x14 with borders. They are printed on thick double weight paper. Because of the thickness of the paper, there is slight curling to the bottom borders, but this does not affect the pictures. They are black and white, slight sepia because of their age. There is a small nick on the left margin of each not affecting photos. There are no markings on the backs. Please see my photos, as they are part of the description. Photos will be shipped in a sturdy box. Thank you for looking at my auction. Here is a biography of Col. Young, taken from my book about his wife, the actress Lois Moran: A graduate of Yale, Young briefly practiced law before World War I called him into service. During the war, he became fascinated by flying. He flew bombers from 1917 to 1919 and spent five months as a prisoner of war in Austria. In 1925, he was appointed director of Aeronautics of the United States Department of Commerce and served in the Republican Hoover administration as assistant secretary for Aeronautics from 1929 to 1933. Young was the recipient of the second official pilot's license ever issued, knew Orville Wright, and assigned the pilot's license to Charles Lindbergh that allowed him to make his celebrated nonstop flight to Paris in 1927. Young had known Lindbergh years before that historic flight and remained a close friend. Young appeared on the cover of "Time" magazine in 1932. When FDR took office in 1933, Young moved on, prompting Will Rogers to tell the "Washington Times," "This fellow Clarence Young, the head of commercial aviation, has done more it than anybody since the Wright brothers. I don't know anything about his going to be removed for Democratic purposes, but it will require twelve Democrats to replace him adequately."
