The second book is "Treasury of Early American Automobiles" by Floyd Clymer published by Bonanza 1950. A nostalgic account of the dawn of the US automobile industry, covering the years 1877 to 1925. His informal history begins with attempts to change the horse-drawn wagon or buggy to a unit containing its own power source. Many types of internal combustion or steam driven systems were tried and years passed before reliable and efficient power units were perfected and in the process dozens of models from different inventors/manufacturers produced. Clymer describes well the various stages of this development, with gasoline engines finally proving superior for powering automobiles. In the early 1900s steam power was popular, peaking in quality about 1905, then gradually giving way to gasoline power. It was about that time the car firms which were to become household names in the US and internationally were appearing, including Packard, Cadillac, Ford, Buick and Oldsmobile. Includes a extensive listing of American made cars such as the ones my grandfather help engineer. the Crawford and Dagmar made in Hagerstown, Maryland. The "Treasury." lists 124 makers of the earlier steam cars and between 1900 and 1915, 25 companies contested the gasoline market with a series of electric cars. In taking the development story up to 1925 the author advances the industry to the stage where motor cars were mass-produced, had become accepted as the most convenient form of transport, at a price a family could afford. The automobile industrial revolution in the US had a lasting impact on the environment, politics, culture, religion and throughout the world. 213 pages. Lots of vintage illustrations and advertising. A new condition hard back book. Measures about 8.5" x 11" x 1".
