One of a triptych. Utagawa Yoshitora (active from the 1850s to the 1880s) was a notable ukiyo-e artist during Japan’s late Edo and early Meiji periods. As a member of the Utagawa school, Yoshitora studied under Utagawa Kuniyoshi, a famous ukiyo-e master. Although less renowned than some of his contemporaries, Yoshitora made significant contributions to the ukiyo-e tradition, especially in the fields of warrior prints (musha-e), kabuki actors, and historical scenes. Yoshitora's work is distinguished by its vivid colors, bold compositions, and intricate attention to detail, especially in depictions of warriors, samurai, and legendary battles. Like many ukiyo-e artists of the time, he produced a range of works, including actor portraits, beauty prints, and genre scenes reflecting the urban culture of Edo (modern-day Tokyo). One of Yoshitora's most famous series is the "Yokohama-e," which depicted scenes of foreigners and Western influence in Japan during the Meiji period as the country opened up to international trade. These prints reflected the curiosity and fascination many Japanese had with foreign cultures at the time. Despite the challenges ukiyo-e faced due to the rise of photography and Western art influences, Yoshitora managed to keep the traditional art form alive during the transitional period of Japan’s modernization. ■ Transaction methods and precautions ・All of the ukiyo-e prints in our shop are genuine ukiyo-e prints and woodblock prints made during the Edo to Meiji periods.
