Description: Austria-Hungary: Medal for the Centennial of the Fight for the Liberation of Vorarlberg 30-31 August 1909. Scarce bronze medal commemorating the conflict known as the War of the Fifth Coalition, between the Austrian citizens of Tyrol, and the combined armies of Napoleonic France and Bavaria (see H.D. Rauch catalog October 21, 2010, p. 76, #340; Dorotheum catalog October 2, 1996, no. 2185). The Austrian army consisted largely of militiamen, peasants, craftsmen of Tyrol, and were led by innkeeper Andreas Hofer. The Austrian militia was eventually subdued by the French and Bavarian armies, the rebellion was crushed, and Hofer was executed. The medal is in near extremely fine condition; on the original trifold ribbon with wire brooch and suspension.
