Description: - SCULPTOR Augustus Saint Gaudens AUTOGRAPH Letter SIGNED -- 1897 Letter WRITTEN ENTIRELY in Saint Gaudens OWN Hand (ALS) -- Letter is Addressed to Civil War UNION GENERAL James Grant Wilson - American SULPTOR and COIN DESIGNER Augustus Saint Gaudens AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS) to Civil War UNION GENERAL James Grant Wilson. Letter is dated June 18th 1897, from 148 West 36th Street in New York City, where the sculptor’s studio was located. Letter is written ENTIRELY in Augustus Saint Gaudens OWN hand and is genuinely SIGNED by Saint Gaudens at the conclusion. Letter reads in full – “Dear Sir – Absence from the city and illness has prevented me from replying to your note of the 9th before this. I sent by this mail the photograph you require somewhat the worse for nearly two years now in a sculptors studio / Very truly yours / Augustus St. Gaudens / General Jas Grant Wilson”. Affixed along the very bottom of the letter is a small typed description of the letter likely from an early autograph dealer who sold the letter. This was a not uncommon practice from the past. However, this description would matte out entirely and the letter would frame up handsomely with a steel engraving or image of St. Gaudens himself. AUGUSTUS ST. GAUDENS (1848 – 1907) was an iconic, widely acclaimed American sculptor of the Beaux-Arts generation. Some of his major, important works include – the Robert Gould Shaw Memorial on Boston Common honoring the 54th Massachusetts AFRICAN AMERICAN Volunteer Regiment in the Civil War (the FIRST statue to pay homage to BLACK soldiers), his bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln in Chicago’s Lincoln Park, his General John Logan Memorial in Chicago’s Grant Park, his General William T. Sherman sculpture group located at the Grand Army Plaza in New York’s Central Park, his bronze statue of “The Puritan” in Springfield (MA), his Admiral Farragut Memorial in Manhattan’s Madison Square, and his New York City statue of the Goddess Diana. In 1905, he received a commission from President Theodore Roosevelt to redesign several denominations of American coinage, resulting in St. Gaudens famous designs for BOTH the $10 “Indian Head” American Eagle GOLD COIN and the $20 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle GOLD COIN. CONDITION: letter is guaranteed authentic and original (NOT a photocopy). The letter measures about 5 ¼ x 8 inches in size and is in EXCELLENT overall condition with dark writing. Packages are shipped out within 1 – 3 business days, but typically the next day. Please understand, we do not make any money on shipping costs, but rather run a deficit over the course of a year. Most buyers don’t realize that ebay charges me a 13.3 percent FEE on the item sold, an additional 13.3 percent FEE on my quoted shipping charges, and another 13.3 percent FEE on the sales tax that ebay collects on the item. Everything we sell is packaged with the utmost care. Please read my ebay feedback over the last 25 years. The comments are often – the best packaging I have ever seen or “bullet proof” packaging. We do NOT offer returns for one simple reason. In the past, I have had some buyers purchase items from me and then proceed to shop them around during the return period to try and make a fast profit, without any financial risk. After they were unsuccessful, they returned the item to me. This information, however, made it back to me from different people I know who were directly offered my item immediately after I had sold it and before it was returned to me for a refund. Bid with confidence! You will receive the exact item pictured and in the same condition as described in my listing.
