Description: The medallion set in the middle is commemorative of Enseigne de Vaisseau Henry (F749), a Commandant Rivière-class frigate in the French Navy. Enseigne de Vaisseau Henry was launched on 14 December 1963 and commissioned on 1 January 1965.Dating back as far as the 15th century, a tastevin (pronounced “taht-vahn”, and translating to “taste wine”), is a small, shallow wine tasting cup (usually silver), that was used by winemakers to evaluate the colour and clarity of a wine.The cup is circular with embossed decoration, a ring handle and thumb guard. Cellar masters in Burgundy in France (where a very high-level wine society is called the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin) developed this cup to sample wine down in the cellar where it was dark, lit only by candles. The angular nooks and crannies in the shiny silver cup are designed to catch and reflect the light to make it easier to check the colour and clarity of the wine. Clarity isn’t much of an issue with modern winemaking so the tastevin has mostly been relegated to novelty/collector status. A tastevin with small linear grooves (gordons) is designed for evaluating white wines. A tastevin with round indentations (cupules) is for red wines.
