Description: This is an original Ariel Press company's fine facsimile of John James Audubon's Double Elephant Folio "Snowy Heron or White Egret" (Plate 242) from the Birds of America. The company published this image in 1999 in England (see credit at the bottom in one of the images), using offset-lithography. The dimensions of the sheet are 38 1/2" x 25 1/2". In his monumental masterpiece, viz., the Double Elephant Folio Edition of the Birds of America published during 1827-1838, the naturalist John James Audubon (1785-1851) published 435 drawings of the birds he drew from his observations in Nature. These images were published as hand-colored engravings with aquatint and etching by Robert Havell, Jr in England. Audubon painted the original watercolor painting of the Snowy Heron in Charleston, South Carolina. The image shows a beautiful low country Rice Plantation in the background, and the image of a hunter at the lower right (said to be a self-portrait of Audubon himself). The original hand-colored Plate 242 "Snowy Heron or White Egret" from the 19th century Havell Edition Double Elephant Folio Edition would typically cost between $150,000 to $200,000 in retail. Thus, this fine facsimile is an attractive alternative to owning Audubon's art at an affordable price. Best Offers Encouraged ! All sales are final.
