ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Beautiful & Ultra-Rare Antique Circa Early 1920s New/Old Stock Hand-Colored Photo-mechanical Motto Verse Card (not a later reprint or modern reproduction) Depicting a Floral Motif with the Famous Scottish Table Grace Blessing/Poem titled, “Burns’ Grace” (AKA “Selkirk Grace” or “Burns’ Grace at Kirkcudbright”), after the c1787 ‘attributed’ blessing/verse by the world-renowned National Poet of Scotland & lyricist, ‘Robert Burns’ (Scottish, 1759-1796) whose name appears at the end of the Motto verse, and who is world-famous for his song, “Auld Lang Syne” which is still sung today in Scotland at the traditional Hogmanay (the last day of the year) and by people across the globe to celebrate the New Year. We currently have other rare Buzza Mottos & various antique mottos listed, so please have a look! About the Burns’ Grace: Burns wrote several blessings (AKA Burns’ Suppers) for use before and after dining and the particular blessing on our piece, “Burns’ Grace” (AKA “Selkirk Grace”) is traditionally delivered at Burns suppers and is often spoken on the traditional Burns’ Night celebration supper (AKA Burns’ Supper) of the poet’s birthday on January 25 of each year as a giving of thanks before guests eagerly ‘tuck’ into their Burns’ Night dinner of haggis, neeps and tatties! The Selkirk Grace has no connection with the town of Selkirk, beyond its name; and it originated in the west of Scotland. Although attributed to Robert Burns, the Selkirk Grace was already known in the 17th century, as the “Galloway Grace” or the “Covenanters’ Grace”. It came to be called the “Selkirk Grace” because Burns, while on a visit to St. Mary’s Isle in 1794 to the seat of the Earl of Selkirk at St Mary’s Isle Priory located in Kirkcudbright in Galloway, Burns was asked to say grace at one of the dinner parties given by the Earl and he offered up this particular grace—which also became known as “Burns’ Grace at Kirkcudbright”. Burns recited it at many dinners, and many people often mistakenly thought that he wrote it, and is the reason why it has been attributed to him over the years. There are a few variations of the blessing itself, but our verse reads in the Scots Anglic language (AKA Lowland Scots) with Burns’ printed signature at the end: BURNS’ GRACE Some ha’e meat, and canna eat, And some wad eat that want it; But we ha’e meat and we can eat; And sae the Lord be thankit Robert Burns− (In English) Some have meat, and cannot eat And some would eat that want it; But we have meat and we can eat; And say the Lord be thankful Publisher & Motto Card Info: The publisher’s copyright, name & location, ‘© Reinthal & Newman, N.Y.’, appears printed lower-left in the outer margin corner, and the inventory number, ‘No. 92’, appears printed lower-right respectively (For: Reinthal & Newman (American Publishers, 1906-1928). The Motto was likely sold through The House of Art, which was the distributive arm of Reinthal & Newman (American Publishers, 1906-1928). The company initially produced and sold thousands of postcards from 1906-1920, when they then began to publish art prints, Musée series of old masters works, mezzo prints and lithographs from the original illustrations of many famous artists, as well as other works of art. The company went out of business in 1928, but the House of Art went on to distribute art prints, cards, puzzles, and books through the 1950s. The Motto is on a nice stiffer heavy-weight cream-colored wove paper cardstock with beautiful hand-colored accents. Size & Condition: The Motto size is 10-1/2” x 7”. The Motto is in VeryGood-Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique age and has been in one of our archive drawers amongst other lithos & prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time. It’s as good as any collector could hope to find in its original ‘New/Old Stock’ never-framed condition. No tears & no foxing evident! Minimal slight toning of the stock from its antique age, which isn’t really noticeable amidst the cream color of the paperboard stock itself. There is very minimal & slight outer edge-wear with a few dents & dings here & there and some small dog-ear bends in a few outer margin corners with some associated tiny outer corner denting—any outer margin issues are basically negligible and can easily be mated & framed out. This beautiful antique motto/blessing has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade. We normally ship within 2 business days of cleared payment, but PLEASE NOTE: Please allow extra delivery time for your item(s) to clear all Customs Houses (U.S. and Abroad-typical delivery time about 14 business days +/-). Under U.S. law we are unable to mark a smaller amount or to declare the item a gift, sample, or anything other than merchandise prints/paintings etc, so PLEASE DO NOT ASK. We are a respectable business & must transact our auctions honestly & by the law. We would be liable and would get in trouble if there were any complications. The value marked on the Customs form will be the final auction price for any or all prints/paintings & will not include shipping. Most items will be shipped rolled in a Heavy-Duty Tube to save on shipping costs. Some may be shipped flat/hardpacked at our discretion. NOTES FOR ALL BIDDERS: COMBINED SHIPPING: We offer Combined Shipping, for multiple winning auctions if the items can be put into the same package. Note: Some Combined Rates may be higher due to Combined Weight changes or Oversized (OS1) dimensions, for items such as: Framed items, multiple paintings on canvas, oversized items etc. Please wait until we email you an appropriate invoice reflecting the discount for any multiple item auction wins before you pay via PayPal, or you can email us for an invoice after auction end. We normally ship items within 2 business days of receiving cleared payment. Please Note: Our gallery is closed Sundays & Mondays. We make every effort to pack artwork securely and carefully as per the items’ specifications. Due to the Antique/Vintage nature of MOST of our items, at our discretion we ship items flat or in heavy-duty tubes and they are securely & safely packed with each item wrapped in packing paper or archival glassine, then secured in between oversized cardboard or rolled in a heavy duty tube, then bubble-wrap is added, as per the item's specifications. Please read through all of our 'Selling Policies' listed above and please be aware of what you are bidding on and feel free to ask any questions, or research the item BEFORE placing a bid. EMAILING US: eBayers, at all costs, please use eBay's email system only (no outside email addresses) with any questions you may have. eBay's email system GUARANTEES we get your email and more importantly, that you get ours. A lot of servers in the last few years have started using newer SPAM filters, and there have been a lot of problems with GOOD emails not getting through correctly, and being returned as undeliverable. We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it. COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early. It would not be fair to the rest of the eBay Worldwide community if we did that. THE HIGHEST BIDDER -OR- HIGHEST OFFER WINS IT!!!!! Thank you from the Staff at Meibohm Fine Arts, GOOD LUCK & HAPPY BIDDING!!!
