Description: 1920’S 30’S VINTAGE ATKINS OR SIMMONDS LOGGING BUCKING SAW This is one of the best logging saw that was ever made. The blade is 60” long (5 foot). It has the Pacific Coast Tooth Pattern (lance tooth). The teeth repeat a pattern of one raker tooth-One chip gullet-Four alternate bevel cutting teeth-One chip gullet-and then the pattern repeats again. The factory grind on the teeth is either the patented SEGMENT GRIND for Atkins or CRESCENT GRIND for Simmonds. Atkins numbers the saw as a #51 Silver Steel while Simmonds #'s it a 520 Royal Chinook. The grind keeps the saw from binding in the cut. The cutting edge is ground uniformly at 13 gauge the entire length. The top edge is ground 17 gauge in the middle and tapers to 15 gauge on both ends. Factory grind marks can be seen on the blade. The blade shows no broken teeth. All teeth are the same length and show no damage at all. The blade is 6 1/4"” wide at the middle and tapers to 4 1/2” at both ends. The teeth are 1 3/8"long and razor sharp ready to cut. Handles have all hardware. One handle shows the Atkins Silver Steel decal. The saw comes with vintage custom made hardwood tooth guard to protect you and the saw teeth when traveling or storing. Note: The saw also could be a Simmonds #520 Royal Chinook as this saw has the same metal grind only Simmonds calls it Crescent Ground. This #520 also has a 13 gauge full tooth area and a 17 gauge middle tapering down to 15 gauge on both ends. One of these two makers made this saw as no logo was visible on the saw to pin it down. Note: Atkins book and metal gauge are not part of sale. This is an EXCELLENT example of one of the saws used in the early days of logging in the PACIFIC NORHTWEST forests. Prior to the invention of the gasoline powered chain saw this was the only way to harvest the trees in the old growth and second growth forests of the Pacific Northwest.
