Description: This unique piece of art from the Asmat people of Papua New Guinea depicts tribal wood house figures. Large, medium and small sized old Asmat carved and painted wood figural sculptures. Early to mid 20th century. The large sculpture depicts two figures, a man standing on shoulders of woman. Both figures have carved tattoo or skin ornamentations that have been painted black and red. Medium is male sitting with hands on legs while Smaller one is woman sitting in thought. Both also have carved tattoos on arms and legs painted. All three are free standing. Base of largest has crack started in back. Also showing through chest and head of top figure and body of lower figure. The sculptures has a very old oxidized patina with darkening to the painted and unpainted wood surfaces. NOTE: the larger sculpture has a nail through arm like maybe it was an attempt at repair? SIZE: Height Approximately - 42" / 30.5” /18.5” AGE: Early to mid 20th century. Circa 1940's - 1960's. PROVENANCE: From an estate collection. Said to have been collected in its present condition during the early 1960’s.
