Description: Asmat Canoe Shaped Bowl Human Heads as Prows Tribal Artifact from Papua New Guinea – Lot 129 This unique Asmat Bowl features a canoe shape with small knobs derived from Human heads as Prows and adorned with intricate tribal artifacts along the sides is the typical canoe border design decorated with motifs in high relief. These long and narrow bowls are distinguished by the thickness of the wood. The body of the bowls shows various types of ornamentation. These were mainly used to hold colors used by the carvers. Old inventory numbers (194). It is a rare find and is believed to have originated from Papua New Guinea. The bowl has been handmade and is in its original state without any modifications. It is a great addition to any collection and a representation of the Pacific Island culture.Provenance: A private collection. Collected in the early 1970s during an expedition and personally selected art prior to New Guinean regulations limiting the export of art.Condition: This piece is one-of-a-kind, hand carved by Asmat Tribesmen along the Sepik River.
