Description: This is the illustrated 1928 *first edition* of The BON VIVANT’S COMPANION by Professor Jerry Thomas — edited and with an introduction by HERBERT ASBURY. This is the famous prohibition reissue of the secrets of the legendary bartender. Contains 306 of Jerry Thomas's most famous drink recipes, including a chapter on "Temperance Drinks.” The Gangs of New York author HERBERT ASBURY supplies a lively and entertaining 50pp introduction detailing Thomas's role in elevating the cocktail to a national obsession. Describing the ‘professor’ as the greatest mixologist of his age, ASBURY opines: “In these decayed and evangelical times, when drinking has reverted to a savage guzzling of liquid dynamite, the name of Jerry Thomas arouses no answering spark of manhood from the craven victims of bootleg liquor or the cowed and beaten slaves who labor in the gloomy galleys of the Anti-Saloon League.” Your own independent research will verify that this is the hard-to-find first printing of the first ASBURY edition … Octavo hardback, around 5.25 inches by more than 8.5 tall, is bound in its publisher's original yellow boards backed, as called for, in red cloth [as photos] with tilting in original gilt. First edition edited by and with ASBURY introduction + 19th century illustrations depicting of bartenders and drinking scenes. Published by Alfred A Knopf, New York, in 1928. With an old clipping describing two Sporting Times cocktail recipes tipped in to upper left of colophon [as shown in photo, further below]. Free from permanent inscription and markings to the text. Although interior condition is overall good + , because this original letterpress book is nearly 100 years old, it does display minor signs of use and age — such as the usual discolouration to old paper — consistent with a printed object of this vintage. Tops of all pages stained red, indicating the first printing. All li preliminary pages + 169 pp main text (inc index) + colophon at rear are complete and correct √. ¶ HERBERT ASBURY (1891–1963); American journalist and writer best known for his books detailing crime during the 19th and early-20th centuries, including his 1927 The Gangs of New York later adapted for film as Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York. ¶ ⁂ Further ref: Noling, p. 403 infra et supra ⁂ Your book, anywhere within the UK, is sent to you FREE.
