McCredie, "Dealers in Fancy Silk Goods, Paris Embroideries, Shawls, Hosiery, Gloves, Lace, Linens, Prints, &c. &c.," October 27th, 1831, payment received November 28th of that same year. Previous folds with some splitting not approaching text, light toning to extremities, else Near Very Good. Receipt made out to a Mrs. H.W. Livingstone, who purchased several yards of Merino wool and cloth, a Hernani shawl, and silk velvet, a purchase totalling $52.50 1/2 (about $1500 in today's currency). The Hernani shawl appears to have been a fashion based on Victor Hugo's play "Hernani," which opened in Paris in February, 1830; by May the following year "Hernani Shawls" were being imported from France to the United States, though the play had yet to be mounted there.
