After closing Dawson Gallery in 1993, Shirley continued to work for the arts as an art critic for Rochester newspapers and feature writer for such trade magazines as "Ceramics Monthly", "Metalsmith Magazine", "Fiberarts" and "Ceramics Art and Perspective." Her parallel public life was as an advocate for good urban design and a cheerleader for downtown Rochester - pushing especially for increased residential options.
