Description: Art Print Frederick Polley Gloucester Fore and Aft Rigging Mr. Frederick Polley, nationally known painter and etcher, is probably best known to the general public through his illustrations. He is a contributor of full page art features to the Woman's Home Companion, Arts and Decoration, and other New York publications. He produced the American Cities series of drawings which appeared in Scribner's Magazine from 1920 to 1924, and also was illustrator of Literary Indiana which was published by Bobbs-Merrill Company of Indianapolis. For the past few years Mr. Polley has contributed special art features to the Indianapolis Sunday Star. Mr. Polley is exceptionally well known to art connoisseurs as an etcher. Etching not only requires soundness in drawing, but also very great technical knowledge and skill, and Mr. Polley has gained an enviable reputation in this field. His work has won a place in the principal art centers of America. In 1925 Mr. Polley won first prize for etchings at the Hoosier Salon at Chicago, and has also won first prize for etchings in the professional group exhibitions at the Indiana State Fair every year for the past six years. He has exhibited for several years with the Living American Etchers at the National Arts Club, New York, and also with the Chicago Society of Etchers and the Brooklyn Society of Etchers International Exhibitions. He exhibited five prints in the Philadelphia Sequi-Centennial in 1926. Mr. Polley's paintings and etchings have been exhibited regularly since 1910 in the Annual Exhibition of Indiana Artists held at the John Herron Art Institute of Indianapolis. In addition to his individual work, Mr. Polley has done much educationally for the advancement of art. He has served as instructor at Herron Art School of Indianapolis and was for three seasons Instructor in Design of the Teachers Training and Extension classes of Indiana University. He was also for nine years Instructor in Art at Arsenal Technical High School of Indianapolis.Mr. Polley is a charter member of the Indiana Artists Club, which he served for one year as Vice- President and for three years as President. He is also an artist member of the Salmagundi Club of New York City and of the Chicago Galleries Association, of Chicago. Mr. Polley studied with William Forsythe, Indianapolis; James R. Hopkins, Provincetown, Massachusetts, and Corcoran Art School, Washington, D. C. His permanent residence and studio is at Indianapolis, Indiana.
