No. 46-48 are bracts of doubtful origin, but which nevertheless appear to date from the 11th century..A bracteate (bract) is a flat, thin, single-sided gold medal worn as jewelry that was produced in Northern Europe. Gold bracteates commonly denote a certain type of jewelry, made mainly in the 5th to 7th century AD, represented by numerous gold specimens. Bead-rimmed and fitted with a loop, most were intended to be worn suspended by a string around the neck, supposedly as an amulet. The types of bracts include: A-bracteates: showing the face of a human, modelled after antique imperial coinsB-bracteates: one to three human figures in standing, sitting or kneeling positions, often accompanied by animalsC-bracteates: showing a male's head above a quadruped, often interpreted as the Germanic god Woden.D-bracteates: showing one or more highly stylized animalsE-bracteates: showing an animal triskele under a circular featureF-bracteates: as a subgroup of the D-bracteates, showing an imaginary animalM-'bracteates': two-sided imitations of Roman imperial medallions Size: VERY OVERSIZED, approximately 11" X 15"Condition: Excellent - Very Good - Good - Fair - Poor (but of historical interest) << Click Here to See Other History Prints >> Important: P/H is combined on multiple items that can be mailed together. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.History-On-Paper Item #821-L1984Chest
