About Xcode Tools Compatibility and Installation Xcode Tools 1.0 Release for Mac OS X version 10.3 (Panther) ContentsCompatibility with Mac OS X VersionsCompatibility of Built BinariesUsing Xcode Tools with WebObjects DeveloperInstalling the Xcode ToolsTroubleshootingCompatibility with Mac OS X Versions The Xcode Tools will run on Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther). It will not install or run on earlier versions of Mac OS X. You can use Xcode Tools to develop software for Mac OS X 10.1, Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar), or Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) using the new Mac OS X SDK support. For more information on this, please see the Xcode documentation, available from the Help menu of Xcode. Compatibility of Built Binaries With the Xcode Tools, you can build two-level namespace binaries, which run on Mac OS X 10.1 and later. Those two-level namespace binaries will also run on systems earlier than Mac OS X 10.1, provided that: Those binaries do not require new APIs that did not exist on earlier systems. Instead, at runtime you can check for the existence of APIs and dynamically load the necessary symbols if you are running on a system where they are available. Those binaries do not reference symbols of the same name from more than one shared library (or your application). While systems earlier than Mac OS X 10.1 can run two-level namespace binaries, those systems cannot properly resolve multiple symbols of the same name. The gcc compiler’s ABI (Application Binary Interface) for C++ programs has been changing as the compiler’s support for the full C++ language has become more complete. As a result of these changes, C++ code that is bound together must be created by the same version of the compiler in order to be guaranteed to work. Consequently, it is a bad idea to create libraries with C++ interfaces that are built (or distributed) independently of the code that uses those libraries. The gcc 3.3 compiler is the default compiler for Xcode, and has a different ABI than either the gcc 3.1 compiler (the default compiler for the December 2002 release of the Developer Tools) or the gcc 2.95 compiler (the default compiler for earlier releases of the Developer Tools). C++ ABI differences include changes to name mangling, exception handling, and class layout and alignment. All of your C++ code, including libraries and frameworks, must be built with the same compiler. IOKit-based device drivers built with the gcc 3.3 compiler will run on Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) an Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) systems. However, you must use gcc 2.95.2 if you write kernel extensions that need to run on Mac OS X 10.1. Using Xcode Tools with WebObjects Developer For WebObjects 5.2 development on Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther), you must install WebObjects 5.2.2 Developer and use Xcode. The development tools included with WebObjects 5.2 cannot be used on Mac OS X 10.3. About AppleScript Studio AppleScript Studio enables the creation of native Mac OS X applications written entirely in AppleScript or a combination of AppleScript and other languages such as Objective-C or Java. AppleScript Studio combines the unique power and abilities of AppleScript with the same Aqua interface elements used by traditional Cocoa and Carbon developers. The result is a robust rapid development environment that taps the flexibility and reach of AppleScript to create innovative applications for Mac OS X quickly and easily. What’s New in Xcode Tools Xcode Tools 1.0 Release forMac OS X version 10.3 (Panther) Introduction Xcode Tools include everything you need to develop software for Mac OS X, including the programming tools, system API documentation, and Mac OS X interfaces, libraries, and example source code. Compatibility and InstallationImportant! Please read the compatibility notes and installation instructions in the “About Xcode Tools” document. What's New • Xcode is Apple’s new Integrated Development Environment, containing:- A new, more intuitive user interface for developing applications.- ZeroLink - run your executable without linking.- Fix & Continue - dynamically apply code changes to your executable without ending yourdebugging session.- Distributed builds using Rendezvous, allowing your entire work group to take advantage ofeach other’s machines to compile your projects.- Code Sense – always up-to-date source code indexing and code completion.- SDK Support – You can now develop software for Mac OS X 10.1, Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar), orMac OS X 10.3 (Panther) from one machine.- CodeWarrior importing – Importing projects from CodeWarrior has been vastly improved.- Many, many more features and enhancements.Release Notes containing detailed information on changes can be found in/Developer/Documentation/ReleaseNotesafter installation. You can also access release notes from Xcode’s Help menu using theShow Release Notes menu item after installation.• CHUD 3.0.0: The Computer Hardware Understanding Developer Tools (CHUD Tools) are a setof applications and tools for measuring and optimizing software performance on Mac OS X, aswell as for hardward bringup and system benchmarking• gcc 3.3 is the default compiler. gcc 3.3 offers the following advantages over gcc 3.1:- Support for optimized code generation for the new PowerPC G5 processor.- Support for stub libraries.- Many performance optimizations.- A new precompiled header mechanism that works for C, Objective C, C++ and Objective C++.- Improved compile time vs. gcc 3.1.- Updated compiler user manuals.- A new option, -fast, which will make some programs execute much faster, particularly on a G5.• Documentation - This release contains a new navigation system for accessing documentation. All of the navigation pages have been redesigned and populated with documents according toa new categorization scheme. In addition, the HTML presentation of individual documents haschanged to provide better access to content. For more information on new features, see the individual “What’s New” documents for summariesof each area.Buyer pays $4.00 shipping within the US, outside the US actual shipping charges will be used.
