It holds the distinction of being the last time humans set foot on the Moon or traveled beyond low Earth orbit. Here are some key details about this historic mission: Crew Members : Commander : Gene Cernan Lunar Module Pilot : Harrison Schmitt Command Module Pilot : Ronald Evans Mission Duration : Apollo 17 lasted 12 days, 13 hours, 51 minutes, and 59 seconds . Lunar Exploration : Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt walked on the Moon , while Ronald Evans orbited above. Schmitt, a professional geologist, was the only scientist to land on the Moon during the Apollo missions. The landing site was Taurus-Littrow , chosen to sample lunar highland material older than that at Mare Imbrium and investigate the possibility of relatively recent volcanic activity. Scientific Emphasis : Apollo 17 placed heavy emphasis on science, including new experiments. Notably, a biological experiment containing five mice was carried in the command module. Lunar Rover : The mission utilized the third Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) . The astronauts drove the LRV a total distance of 35.7 kilometers (22.2 miles) on the lunar surface. Splashdown : The mission concluded with a successful splashdown in the South Pacific Ocean on December 19, 1972 . Apollo 17 marked the end of an era, leaving an indelible mark on human space exploration history.
