Description: This richly detailed silkscreen by Antonio Martorell was made for a 1980 exhibit on "El Arte de la Aguja en Puerto Rico" (The Art of Needlepoint in Puerto Rico). It is in very good condition. was never used or exhibited. The colors and paper are strong. There is a faint 1/4 inch fold on the right lower corner (See photo) and a few light age spots on the back (See photo) which do not penetrate the front. This artwork, which is rarely available for sale, has been kept in a cool dry place and never exposed to light. Martorell signed his name on plate (See photo) and painted his initials on the needlepoint in the center (See photo). BIOGRAPHY: Born in 1939, Antonio Martorell was born in the Santurce neighborhood of San Juan, Puerto Rico. He is a painter, graphic artist, sculptor, set designer for plays, installation and performance designer and university professor. After graduating from Georgetown University in Washington D.C with a career aimed at diplomacy, he turned to art. He won a 1961 scholarship to study art in Madrid. Upon his return to the island, he began working as a graphic artist at the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture's (ICP) Graphic Arts Workshop under acclaimed artist Lorenzo Homar. In 1968, he started "Taller Alacran" and headed it until 1971. The artists workshop was to denounce Puerto RIco's social and political realities. Martorell has taught in Puerto Rico, Argentina, Colombia and Mexico City, where he lived from 1978-84. He now lives in Ponce, Puerto Rico and continues to be a prolific artist.
