Description: YANOMAMI “XOTO” BASKET The Yanomami also called Yanomamo, and Yanomama, Shiriana, Yanam and Sanuma and Yanomae live deep in the jungles of the Amazon basin in both Venezuela and Brazil. They have successfully maintained their traditional ways of life thus considered one of the last culturally intact native populations in the world. Made exclusively by women, xoto, and wïï burden baskets (pic no. 6) are woven from the titica vine with black fungi threads or painted with natural paint, either a reddish color from crushed onoto seeds or black masticated charcoal or from the dark colored fruit genipapo. They are often decorated with traditional designs and symbols that are reflections of their cosmology. Approximately 16 inches in diameter by 4 inches tall. Condition is very good to excellent.
