Description: MAP 56 Antique Map: SCHERER, H “Beatam me dicent omnes Generationes” 1702 Munich NOTE: I fell (again) last week and will be 87 (God willing) in three weeks. My wife (and I) are anxious to find homes for the treasures we have collected in our 56 years of marriage. The day after I fell, I offered this map to an Auction House for consignment. They MAY list it and might sell it (hammer price) for $2000. And IF they do, (a) the buyer will have to pay 25% more: $2,500, and (b) I will get 10% less: $1,800! Do you want to make an offer (e.g.$1999) that – even with eBay’s fees -- is fair – and saves YOU some money? If you are at all interested, please read the listing below. There is much to be learned and I worked collecting this information. Special Features: Amazing World Map the whole map is a Latin Prayer! California as an Island! Two Sailing ships in the oceans. The corners decorated with four representations of the Continents as Women! Two large decorative cartouches. Guest Editor: I, Harald Leuba, am listing this map on eBay with the permission of the eBay account holder, my wife of 56 years, Nancy Kingsbury, aka "Showjudge". She is worried about how to find homes for our "stuff" when I die -- > if I die before her. We have enjoyed living with this map on the walls of our home, but as I age, (I am now 86), I feel that I ought to protect IT from becoming lost in some 2nd hand store and, more importantly, I need to protect Nancy from having to cope with how to harvest its reasonable value in a time of personal stress. [In other words: We are downsizing!]...... I bought this map from John Faupel, Antique Atlas, East Grinstead, UK some 20 years ago. It was his # 21 in catalog 113. I have misplaced John's catalog. However: (a) John titled it: SCHERER, H “Beatam me dicent omnes Generationes” 1702 Munich O,quis quis te intelligis in huisus faeculi profluvio magis inter procellas & temperstates fluctuare, quam per terram ambulare: ne avertas oculos a fulgore hui' SIDERIS, fi non vis obrui procellis. Si insurgant venti tentationum, respice STELLAM, voca MARIAM. In periculis, in angustijs, in rebus dubijs MARIAM cogita, MARIAM invoca: non recedat ab ore, non recedat a' corde. S. Bern Hom 2 super Misses.” Munich 1702 And (b) If I put SCHERER, H “Beatam me dicent omnes Generationes” Munich 1702 Into Google:I get 13,400 hits (beause Google is looking for the words, not the music!) But (c) If I click on “Images”: The first (and only) match is from Barry Lawrence Ruderman Antique Maps, Inc. [See my screen shot Photo # 8 above.) BLM says: Cartographer: Heinrich Scherer Title: Beatam Medicient Omens Generatione [Map of the World, centered on the Pacific Ocean] Publication: Munich 1703 Image Size: 14 x 9.5 inchesColor: UncoloredPrice: SOLD (but he offers a Hi-Res Image File for $29.95 …..My Comment: Having verified the identity of the map we are seeking a home for, it may be useful to explain WHAT this map is saying: It’s a Latin prayer! “Beatam me dicent omnes Generationes O,quis quis te intelligis in huisus faeculi profluvio magis inter procellas & temperstates fluctuare, quam per terram ambulare: ne avertas oculos a fulgore hui' SIDERIS, fi non vis obrui procellis. Si insurgant venti tentationum, respice STELLAM, voca MARIAM. In periculis, in angustijs, in rebus dubijs MARIAM cogita, MARIAM invoca: non recedat ab ore, non recedat a' corde. All Generations will call me blessed O, whosoever understandest thee towaver in the house of the dung-flow, more among tempests and tempests, than to walk upon the earth: do not avert your eyes from the brightness of this STAR, for you do not want to be overwhelmed by storms. If the winds of temptation arise, look to the STAR, call MARY.In dangers, in difficulties, in doubtful matters, think of Mary, invoke Mary: let her not depart from the mouth, let her not depart from the heart. Sub Tuum Prasidium Consugimus We take shelter under your protectionSANCTA DEI GENITRIX HOLY MOTHER OF GODNostras deprecations ne despicias Do not despise our entreatiesIn necessitatibus nostris In our needs Sed apericulis cunctis libera nos But deliver us all the temptationsSemper, VIRGO GLORIOSA & BENEDICTA Always, glorious and blessed Virgin DOMINA NOSTRA MEDI Our Lady of the MiddleATRIX NOSTRA, ADVOCA TA NOSTRA Our Nurse, Our Advocate My Comment: This map is in astonishing condition for its age: 320 years!A bold, crisp impression, bright and clean, with wide margins; invisible seam between two sheets, as issued; no marks, rips, or tears. Our map is not colored. The map lies flat. The map surface is lovely and bright and clean, No offsetting or darkening. We have cared for this map by holding it flat in an Archive Binder with Acid free Plastic sleeves. If you are interested enough in maps to be considering one of this value, you know that the plates for antique maps were often reused/reprinted/recycled/revised and that there are many different (related) versions available today. You will also know that maps were not usually stand-alone images. They appeared in bibles, histories, and even, as here, in atlases! Last month, Barry Ruderman came to our house to look at our maps with a view to his acquiring the whole collection. He was warmly professional and lived up to his reputation for expertise. He said that our maps had been well cared for and were in good condition. I rejected his offer. My records show that I paid $2,500 for this map. I will accept offers less than that. Take a look and Buy it Now, or make an offer......Please help us find a new home for this treasure. Thank you for looking. Harald & Nancy P.S. Inflation? NO! When I bought my first map, there was silver in our US coinage. When I was in college, I could buy a gallon of gas for a silver quarter and mail a letter home for 4ç. I can STILL buy a gallon gas for the value of that silver quarter, but postage is now 60ç. Antique maps have doubled in price in the last ten years. Are they a store of value? I think so, but whether they are or not, they can be a permanent source of pleasure. P.P.S We are using the proceeds of this sale, not to add “dollars” to our bank account, but to support local charities (to help neighbors who have lost income due to Covid)!I hope you are pleased with your purchase and have warm feelings about helping others.
