Description: Antique Wooden Prohibition Era Whiskey Crate From Old Stone Distillery Co., Owensboro, Kentucky This is a great original Prohibition whiskey crate with the original US Internal Revenue tax stamp and freight stamp from the American Railway Express Company. The 100 proof whiskey was made in the spring of 1916 by MP Mattingly, Jr. (distiller) for the Old Stone Distillery, bottled and inspected in the spring of 1926, and shipped by rail to US Storekeeper Gauger. The crate originally contained 3 gallons of whiskey bottled in 24 bottles. Since this whiskey was sold during Prohibition (1920-1933) and could only be obtained by a prescription from a doctor, the side of the crate warns that the whiskey is for medicinal purposes only, and that if used for other purposes heavy penalties would be inflicted. Dimensions and Weight:19” x 14 1/2” x 10” (LWH)Crate weighs 8 lb. Condition:Great antique condition with dark ink lettering. Both the tax stamp and the freight stamp are intact and legible. It appears that the exterior of the crate was strapped with a metal strap for shipment and all sides have a groove due to the strapping. There is also a slight dent on the side of the crate with the tax stamp that has indented the tax stamp, and a small piece of wood near one of the top side corners that is cracked, but intact. (Please see photos.) Overall, the crate is extremely sturdy and in great condition based on its age and history.
