The mechanism is set in a beautiful case of burled and ebonized walnut with satinwood lid. The entire box rests upon its original matching table supported by handsome Victorian turned legs. This music box serves not only as melodious entertainment but also as a fine example of Victorian furniture.There are 4 Brass Cylinders, each with songs, are stored within the table drawer and are capable of playing a variety of tunes with crisp, beautiful sound. Music boxes were at the height of fashion in the late 19th century serving as a status symbol for European gentry. Switzerland was the birthplace of cylindrical music boxes and home to the most renowned manufacturers. Large boxes with many cylinders such as this one had the best orchestral sounds, making them the most desirable of their time. They are some of the most highly sought after Turned ebonised legs (removable) to table, brass escutcheon handles to sides of the case. This fine music box has a spring driven mechanism with fixed winding handle. The 4 cylinders have 6 airs each and play on a single comb. The box is veneered with rosewood and has fine marquetry inlay. It stands on a similarly veneered table with two drawers storing the extra cylinders. The case finish is 100% original and in very good- excellent condition. Together with its matching table to store the extra cylinders, it must have been an object that was a prize possession of the owner. There are 4 cylinders that come with it and each has 6 elaborate tunes. These are all stored in a drawer inside a beautiful matching 42 inch wide-29 h-23 deep table.
