Description: Collectable, Souvenir Spoon featuring Paul von Hindenburg, "Field Marshall."Part of a series commemorating Imperial German patriotic motifs. Paul von Hindenburg (1847-1934) was a German field marshal and president of the Weimar Republic who became a war hero during World War I. Hindenburg was a Prussian army officer who served in the Austro-Prussian War and the Franco-German War. He was appointed to the General Staff in 1878 and reached the rank of general in 1905. During World War I, he was the commander of all German land forces and oversaw the mobilization of the German state for war. He was a national hero for his victories in Poland and Lithuania.Hindenburg was elected president of Germany in 1925 and re-elected in 1932. His presidency was marked by political instability, economic depression, and the rise of Adolf Hitler. Hindenburg reluctantly appointed Hitler as chancellor in 1933, and the Nazi regime suspended civil liberties. Hindenburg died in 1934, and the office of the president was abolished. In good condition, especially considering the age of this spoon! You can see from the photos that there are a few very small spots from tarnishing, within the bowl and at the lip of the spoon. There is also a single tarnish spot at the top, back of the spoon's handle (see pictures of handle back). Back of spoon is marked, "Oneida Communists A1 x"
