Description: ANTIQUE SILVER MOUNTED INSCRIBED LADIES 1830's QUILL AND SEWING KNIFE WITH POUCH ANTIQUE SILVER MOUNTED CHARMING INSCRIBED LADIES QUILL AND SEWING KNIFE CIRCA 1830’S WITH POUCH This is an Antique silver handle Sheffield made Quill bladed Pocket Knife and/or sewing knife inscribed with a Ladies name. This is an unmarked, quality pocketknife made in Sheffield, the knife capitol of the world at the time, and for hundreds of years prior. This piece is unusual as it is unmarked, as knife blanks were ordered by a retailer or jeweler who would affix the stamped sterling scales. Fancy quill knives were a fashionable accessory and necessary accouterment for any affluent Gentleman or Woman at the time. Only a wealthy and learned Gentleman or Lady who know how to read and write during this period would need or have been able to afford a fancy handled silver handled quality pocketknife like this one. This small pen blade could be used for sharpening a Goose quill that was then dipped into an ink well for writing or affixing one's signature to a document, or opening envelopes, cutting string, et al. Ladies would also use these small knives in sewing. Quill knives were made with both the special shaped quill blade made for cutting tough goose feather ends, and also in pen blade styles to open envelopes, cut string, et al. Portable metal pocket dip pens with a tip that slid in and out of a small pocket tube came into use in the mid 1830's; yet pocket knives were still favored by many, and continued to be used for decades as a fashion statement well after the dip pens were widely available and in common use. This small, delicate knife was completely handmade by Sheffield Cutlers using only simple hand tools, i.e., hand forged & hand ground blades, hand tempered springs, hand fitted, et al. This piece is about 4 5/8" open, 3" long closed x 1/2" wide x 3/16" thick. Weight is only .5 of an ounce or 15 grams. The fine 3 dimensional highly detailed oblong swell end silver embossed handles have a seashell pattern used mostly in the 1830’s along with leaf pattens. The back spring has the early feature of wrapping around the pommel about 1/4 of the way around to the front side. Fancy file worked silver overlays on back springs tend to be early, and this one has early style fine line and cross hatch file worked decorations. This hand filing was omitted when later knife patterns became standardized and was soon discontinued due to the extra work and cost and became obsolete. The liners appear to be Iron, most often found on 1830's or prior Sheffield knives. The silver handle has a small, raised banner shaped escutcheon on both sides that is engraved on one side, “Emma Bartlett”, who was the recipient of this gift or presentation piece. This knife has a single, thin, delicate elongated pen shaped knife blade that is about 1 11/16" long with a swedge ground on the top obverse side. The blade has a full tip and the blade snaps open and closed with a strong spring snap. The overall patina is very desirable naturally occurring aging that takes well over a century to form. Complete with a later Victorian period leather snap case with red lining. Overall, this charming, eye appealing, rare & early inscribed Ladies pocket quill knife is in excellent condition for its extreme age of 180+ years. Fine, early, 1830’s period knives are hard to find, and this would be perfect for any knife, Sheffield, Antique, pocketknife, quill knife, ladies sewing knife collector, desk accessory or conversation piece or smalls collection.
