Description: Antique Scratch Built Boat Bottom Noah's Ark, 33 Metal Animals & 1 Person, c1900 This is an an early 20th century painted scratch built wooden, boat bottom model of Noah’s Ark. This will have lovingly been made by a father, as a present for his child or children. The Ark has what is called a boat bottom, this simply means that the bottom of the boat has been made in three dimensions, although it would not have been made to sail on water. In early toy arks it was more likely to simply have been a low platform to represent the boats hull. The hull on this example has a flat base to make it stable during play. The hull has been painted blue with a red prow and stern. Inside the boats hull it provides storage for the animals. Fitted on the inside of the hull are two bars to support the cream deck and living quarters. The deck in turn has a structure for living quarters for Noah and his family. The small shed-like structure has a red lift-off roof, allowing access for play. There is a simple ramp that sits on the side of the boat for the Arks inhabitants to move on and off the boat. The Ark has impressed surface detailing to form roof tiles, planks etc. The Ark is in play worn condition. There are marks and patina commensurate with age and play. It is strong and stable. The ark measures approx. 47.4cm by 13cm by 20cm. The Ark is accompanied by 33 painted lead, possibly pewter, figures of the animals and Noah’s wife who is kneeling in prayer. The figures are pairs of penguins, pelicans, peacocks, chickens, geese, boars, gorillas, giraffes, lions, panthers, tigers, seals, goats, pigs, polar bears and sheep. There is also a rhinoceros and Noah’s wife. The figures are almost complete very little is any losses, there are chips to the painted details. The tallest of the animals, the giraffe measures approx. 9.2cm tall. A great collectable group. Please see pictures for more details. Thanks for looking and Happy Bidding!
