R.S.A Click images to enlarge Description An antique 19th-century Scottish oil painting on canvas, circa 1880 AD, attributed to the prominent, well-known Scottish artist Robert McGregor, R.S.A. (1848-1922). This painting is a prime example of Robert McGregor's signature style and color scheme. His exceptional skills are displayed here, as he has captured the proportions of the children's bodies in various poses with remarkable accuracy. The children's faces are beautifully painted, with intricate details that bring out the expressiveness of their eyes, the fullness of their lips, and the movement of their hair. Furthermore, the costumes depicted in this painting are a testament to McGregor's technical prowess. The realistic texture of the fabric is masterfully captured, bringing out the subtle variations in the dresses and shoes. The attention to detail is remarkable, and it is clear that McGregor has put a great deal of effort into ensuring that every aspect of the painting is true to life. These features are consistent with other works by McGregor, which showcase his exceptional talent as an artist. Overall, this painting is a stunning example of McGregor's style and technical proficiency, and it is sure to be admired by art lovers. The back of the painting bears a 19th-century handwritten inscription, "A suetie group" by R. Mc Gregor AR.S.A. The lower left corner is imprinted with the official 19th-century Scottish business stamp from Edinburgh, a supplier of canvases, stretchers, and panels for artists. ALEXANDER SCOTT ARTISTS COLOURMAN 78 Princes Street EDINBURGH A painting by Robert McGregor, "Great Expectations," from 1879, is in the Scottish National Gallery collection. The canvas is marked in the same way. ALEXANDER SCOTT ARTISTS COLOURMAN 78 Princes Street EDINBURGH Robert McGregor painted both of these artworks in Edinburgh, Scotland, around 1880. The above stamp was used by the ALEXANDER SCOTT company circa 1880. BIOGRAPHY: Robert McGregor was a Scottish painter known for his empathetic portrayals of farm life and the Scottish working class. Like the French painter Jean-François Millet, whom McGregor looked to for inspiration, his oil paintings feature laborers and families going about their work. He painted fishermen, shepherds, and farmers in earthy tones and a great deal of emotional sensitivity, bringing attention to the struggles of the poor and the physical demands of their lives. Born in 1847 in Bradford, England, McGregor was a self-taught artist who began his career as a book illustrator for a publishing company and later became a member of the Royal Scottish Academy for 16 years. Today, his work is exhibited at the National Gallery of Scotland. McGregor died in 1922 in Edinburgh, Scotland. NOTE: The canvas has been altered by cutting it off and fastening it to a smaller strainer frame with new nails. This was necessary because the margins of the canvas were damaged and weakened, causing the old nails to lose their grip on the canvas. Robert McGregor's signature, which was originally at the bottom of the canvas, has been removed in the process. To maintain a record of the signature, it has been signed on the back of the canvas instead. CONDITION: The painting is in good overall condition, with no holes, repairs, or restorations. The painting is housed in its original, antique, 19th-century, very heavy wooden profile frame with elaborate gilt gesso and scrolling foliate ornaments (slightly chipped and worn). DIMENSIONS: Dimensions of the frame: Height: 67.5 cm (26.57 inches). Width: 57.5cm (22.64 inches). Dimensions of the painting: Height: 46 cm (18.11 inches). Width: 35.5 .cm (13.98 inches).
