Description: Johnson's dictionary was not the first, but it is considered the first time the English language as it was used during the time was comprehensively documented. He was contracted in 1746 to meet the demands of a population with growing literacy, and produced a dictionary whose scope was unrivaled by contemporary versions. The Title page reads "A Dictionary of the English Language; in which the words are deduced from their originals; and illustrated in their different significations, by examples from the best writers: together with a history of the Language, and an English Grammar. By Samual Johnson, LL.D." This 1818 printing was made in London, "printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown." The five volumes (A-C+history, D-H, I-O, P-S, T-Z) are bound in two colors of leather with gilt demarkations and feature decorative patterning on the edges. This printing includes "numerous corrections, and with the addition of several thousand words, as also with additions to the history of the language, and to the grammar. By the Rev. H.J. Todd, M.A. F.S.A. Chaplain in ordinary to his Majesty, and Keeper of the Archbishop of Canterbury's Records." Some personal history of these books can also be found on the book plate, which bears variations of the inscription: "I purchased these Vols of Johnson's Dictionary at Los Angeles Calif. at the Christmas Season of 1911." Henry E.M.-Ginn(?) The volumes measure 8 1/2 x 10 7/8" by the cover, and are 10" wide when all together.
