Oil on canvas artwork of good pictorial quality depicting blind Belisarius asking for alms. Flavius Belisarius was one of the great generals of Justinians empire. The Byzantine emperor, however, according to a legend that took root in the Middle Ages, ordered him to be blinded and condemned to beg in the streets of Constantinople. He is recognized only by a soldier who had fought under his command and the moral message of the work is the transience of glory. The painting is a high-quality contemporary copy of the blind Belisarius by Salvator Rosa (1615-1673) now exhibited at the Doria Pamphilj Gallery in Rome. Beautifully decorated 20th century carved and gilded wooden frame, with some signs of aging. Opera ad olio su tela di buona mano pittorica raffigurante Belisario cieco che chiede lelemosina. Flavio Belisario fu uno dei grandi generali dellimpero di Giustiniano. Limperatore bizantino però, secondo una leggenda che prese vigore nel medioevo, avrebbe ordinato di accecarlo e condannato a fare lelemosina per le vie di Costantinopoli. Viene riconosciuto solo da un soldato che aveva combattuto sotto il suo comando e il messaggio morale dellopera è la caducità della gloria. Il dipinto risulta una copia coeva di alta qualità del Belisario cieco di Salvator Rosa (1615-1673) ora esposto alla Galleria Doria Pamphilj a Roma. Cornice lignea scolpita e dorata del XX secolo di bella decorazione, con alcuni segni del tempo. Opera che ha subito un intervento di restauro con rintelo, sostituzione del telaio e ripresa del colore in piccoli punti (vedi foto). Nel complesso in buono stato conservativo.
