Presenting a very Beautiful, Ornate and Symbolic Antique Circa 1890’s Sword from a 19th Century Fraternal Order known as the Knights of The Maccabees, who were historically based on the ancient Jewish Heroic Warriors known as the Maccabees who fought valiantly for liberation and in defense of their Monotheistic beliefs against the oppressive armies of the Pagan ruler Antiochus of Greece and Syria. The sword is stunning. A Marvelous Rococo design, rich in symbols and expert artistry. Scabbard has great silver images. A Bearded old Warrior stands guard. Swerving Hand-Guard is fabulous. Leather covered Grip has ornate wire. The Pommel is a Tent with Warrior. Also noteworthy is the blade, fully decorated by intricately detailed Geometric patterns (inspired by Freemasonry's Geometry) in addition there is a Mysterious Mystical Face. And No Name on blade. The still empty space was never inscribed. In very good vintage condition with only some normal expected minor wear. No problems In the Scabbard, the Sword measures approximately 38 ½ inches. Active during the years 1847-1890, Abraham Kuller zu Wald is known through his famous and somewhat mysterious logo showing a "Wandering Beast" or bear. As were numerous fraternal groups and so-called “Secret Societies”, the "Knights of The Maccabees" were a by-product of the Civil War. After all the bloodshed, citizens desired a reconciliation between the states. They expressed the need for a harmonious existence that would be dependent on Brotherly Love, and often also on strong Spiritual Values based on Biblical traditions and teachings. Thus, the void was filled by the creation of numerous Fraternal Societies. As Freemasonry was by far, the oldest benevolent and esoteric-oriented fraternal organization, their ideals and spirit had given birth to various other groups, such as “The Knights of Pythias”, The Odd Fellows" and “The Woodmen of America”. The Ancient Philosophical tenants of the Masons also inspired the “Knights of The Maccabees”. Founded by what we believe were American Masons in Canada in the year 1878, the “Knights of The Maccabees” reorganized in the United States in 1883. After 1914, they changed their name to merely, "The Maccabees". These facts help us date this sword. Whatever idealistic and esoteric thoughts led the original founders to draw their inspiration from the ancient Maccabees remains a mystery to this day. The Biblical Maccabee Warriors were represented by not only DARING HEROISM, and UNRELENTING BRAVERY in the face of extreme adversity, but also by lives led according to the HIGHEST MORAL STANDARDS. There were some very curious and complex issues and contradictions in the early founding of the modern 19th century Order bearing their name. Although allegedly based upon the high principles of the esteemed self-sacrificing Biblical Judaic group, ironically enough, these latter day "Knights of The Maccabees" were at the outset primarily made up of Protestant Caucasians and maintained a somewhat elitist attitude during their earliest years. Subsequently, all discriminatory ethnic restrictions were done away with and people of all nationalities and religious persuasions were admitted. Eventually, the group also counted Jews, Catholics and Blacks among its membership. The Order offered both social and death benefits and attempted to practice the great moral and spiritual principles of their Biblical namesakes. Much about the group still remains quite obscured by history. Yet the Historical Value of this particular organization and their Regalia is Immensely Important. With today’s interest in things Esoteric, Mystical and Historical, there may yet be a resurgence of studies in early fraternalism and its role in the growth of modern civilizations.
