Description: Antique c1900 original charcoal Portrait drawing believed to be from artist Mary Jenks Coulter (1880-1966). We are under the presumption thet this is an early drawing from Mary Jenks before her marriage to Fred Coulter in 1902 and presumably done while studying at the Cincinnati Art Academy. It is worth noting that Coulter died in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1966 and this drawing was recently deaccessioned from the museum at Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts. Depicts a tremendous charcoal Portrait drawing of an old woman potentially of Native American descent. Medium is charcoal and pastel on handlaid paper done in a Realist style. Signed Mary Jenks in the bottom right hand corner. One can tell the paper is worn with gentle wear and horizontal fold lines indicating thet this piece was salvaged (most likely from her estate) and professionally framed within the last 25 years or so. The paper style fits the period of the early 1900s but its hard to tell exactly without removing it from the frame however I wouldn’t date it much later. Protected behind glass, matted and professionally framed in a stunning silver and black painted gesso and wood frame embellished with ornate decoration. Backed with brown paper and ready to hang. Provenance comes from a deaccessioned collection of art from the muse aim at Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts. In Very Good overall condition. Portrait is clean and bright with no damage or loss of charcoal to the glass. Paper exhibits gentle wear and horizontal fold lines as mentioned above. Frame is in Fine/Excellent condition with no damage or wear. Please note the photos show reflections and glare from the lighting; these are exclusive to the photos and do not show up in person. Displays tremendously! Portrait measures 19” x 13 3/4”. Frame measures 28” x 22 1/4” x 1 1/4” thick. All fair offers considered. Mary Jencques (Jenks) Coulter (1880 - 1966) was active/lived in Massachusetts, California. Mary Coulter is known for Figure and landscape painting, etching.Born in Newport, KY on Aug. 30, 1880. Mary Jencques was a pupil of Duveneck at the Cincinnati Art Academy. After her marriage to Fred Coulter in 1902, she moved to Chicago where she studied a variety of crafts (weaving, bookbinding, jewelry, pottery) at the AIC and was the first curator of etchings and engravings at that school. Upon returning from a tour of Europe, she earned a philosophy degree from the University of Chicago. In 1915 her husband died and she came to California where she served as chairman of the arts-crafts jury for the PPIE. After that time she appears to have divided her time between the East Coast and West Coast. She was a pupil of Lionel Walden in Hawaii for two seasons and later of Charles Hawthorne at Cape Cod. In 1926 she was assistant director of the San Diego Fine Arts Gallery and in the late 1920s moved to Santa Barbara where she lived until her marriage to O. L. Clark in 1953. She then moved to Amherst, MA where she remained until her death on Oct.
