Description: BEAUTIFUL, RARE ANTIQUE Old English Style Turned Carved Wood Chess Set, 32 Pieces, SMALL set, Some Damage, circa 19th Century! ~ Pieces in GREAT condition for age! Set comes as shown 32 PIECES ONLY. NO BOARD, NO BOX. The majority of the chess pieces have an absolutely stunning patina. Typical wear with use & age. A charming set but has some issues: 4 pieces are carved differently (1 Dark Rook, 1 Light Rook, 2 Dark pawns) These 4 pieces might be older replacements or from a different English set same era. The set is as found. Unknown history but history this set has! It is still a wonderful set despite the oddity. 2 Dark wood Knights have damage (1 missing head, base only. The other dark Knight nose off (see photo.) 1 Light Rook has markings on top. Pieces clean. Patina left as found. White spots flash from camera. This set has so much character. Stylized carved horses’ heads for knights. Kings with grooved tops and ball finials as hats, queens with ball finials, rooks as turrets, pawns with ball finials. Appears as an older set. Knights are unusual, but unsure if their design matches 19th-century carver George Merrifield, London, Circa 1830-1840. World Chess Hall of Fame: Merrifield worked as a turner in London from 1818 to 1852. In 1807, he apprenticed under John Calvert, another renowned chess set craftsman.
