Description: This beautiful hand-painted porcelain bowl was made in Japan and manufactured by the Noritake Company, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of china and porcelain. The import of Noritake wares grew out of a trading company established by the Morimura Brothers in New York City in 1876. The Morimura Brothers, whose retail store closed in 1941, were importers of Japanese wares in the United States and the sole importers of Noritake china and porcelain at that time. This square bowl with two handles measures approximately 7” in diameter and 2” in height. It features a lovely pond or river scene with a white swan in the background. Trees and tall grasses are painted along the bank and a pretty pastel sunset is part of the serene setting. The rim of the bowl is accented with a rich brown painted trim. The base is stamped with the pale green Noritake ‘M’ in wreath mark that reads, “Noritake – Hand Painted – Made in Japan”, and dates this piece to 1918. There are a few manufacturing flaws and several paint chips to the brown trim. Otherwise, there are no cracks, crazing or any other evidence of damage. This antique pastel Noritake bowl is crafted of superior workmanship and artistry and would make a lovely addition to any collection.
