This work is appreciated for its beauty and careful preparation in which the human figures which are placed in classical poses and landscapes, while the display of the structures are based on Vesalius' direct observations during five years of dissection at Padua. Its contemporary impact was enormous. It was almost instantly relegated to history and the way was open for the development of modern medicine. The plates are engraved by the Dutch draftsman and engraver Jan Wandelaar (1690-1759) after Jan Steven van Calcar (Jan Stephanus van Kalcker; Italian: Giovanni da Calcar; Latin: Joannes Stephanus Calcarensis) (c. 1499 - 1546), a Dutch-born Italian painter, pupil of Titian. Van Calcar is assumed to have been the illustrator of Vesalius's Fabrica.
