Description: Carte physique, routière et politique d'Europe, indiquant les limites des états d'après les derniers traités de paix By: Adrienne Hubert Brue Date: 1824 (dated) Paris Dimensions: 47.25 x 69 inches (120 x 175.25 cm) A rare opportunity at a professionally joined four sheet wall map of Europe published as part of Brue's monumental Atlas Universel de Géographie Physique, Politique, et Historique, Ancienne et Moderne. While the map itself is not all that rare, recorded sales of the map fully joined are nearly non-existent. This large format wall map presents the European continent from Iceland in the Northwest to Russian Europe in the East and includes all islands throughout the Mediterranean Sea regarded as part of Europe. Other regions show in the map include a partial coastline of Greenland, Africa's Barbary Coast, all of Turkey or Asia Minor, parts of Persia, Siberia, and Independant Tartary including the Caspian and Aral Sea. Like all of Brue's works, this map incredibly detailed as it presents in painstaking detail the geopolitical geography and physical topography of the European continent. Major regions and countries are outlined in original color, with thousands of towns and cities labeled throughout. Mountain ranges and coastal regions are defined with fine hachures illustrating relief and depth. The map is surrounded with a dark defined border that includes degrees of latitude and longitude on all sides. At the time of this map's publication, the much of the European continent was going through a period of change. Coming of the heals of the late 18th century Age of Enlightenment, many people throughout Europe were discontent with the overwhelming power held by the aristocracy and clergy. In the decade prior to the publication of this map, the French Revolution had spawned the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte who dominated European and global affairs for more than a decade while leading France against a series of coalitions in the Napoleonic Wars until his collapse at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. For the next several decades that followed, Europe centered on the five "Great Powers;" the United Kingdom, France, Prussia, Austria, and Russia. Condition: Map is in A condition, four sheets, professionally joined with some vertical folds from being bound within the original atlas. Some offsetting is apparent and most noticeable in the Atlantic Ocean and Arctic Sea. The map retains full margins on all sides and is ready for an impressive frame. Inventory #11514 1932 S.
