Description: Antique Longwy Boch de Nothomb-era Faïence Chinoiserie-style Mantel ClockSignature shade of “blue de Longwy,” with flower pattern typical of Longwy styleSun pendulum, perhaps a nod to the Sun King, Louis XIVTopped with traditional Chinese foo dogClock parts manufactured by Japy FreresMakers mark on bottom dates this clock from 1816 to 1835, during the factory’s Boch and Nothomb era. Longwy is located in France, near the Belgium border, and was home to a few manufacturers who decorated earthenware using a cloisonné technique. Here, the term “cloisonné,” which means compartmentalized in French, is used literally to mean sections of bright color. This is as opposed to the Asia cloisonné technique of making a metal outline against a base, traditionally brass, and filling it in with colored glass paste.Faïence makers used a technique of applying an opaque glaze first, allowing the artisan to carve designs on an object’s surface in relief, imitating the Asia cloisonné technique. Measures approx. 12.5" X 7" X 5" Untested. Clock face needs restoration. Some glaze crazing. Otherwise no nicks, chips or cracks (see pics)
