We are pleased to present this rare ceramic broach featuring Lillian Russell. The broach is framed in copper and has a fully functional pin. Lillian Russell (December 4, 1861 – June 6, 1922) was an American actress, philanthropist, political activist, and singer. She became one of the most famous actresses and singers of the late 19th century and early 20th century, and was known for her beauty and style, as well as for her voice and stage presence. For many years, Russell was the foremost singer of operettas in America. Her voice, stage presence and beauty were the subject of a great deal of fanfare in the news media, and she was extremely popular with audiences. We believe this portrait was painted around 1870 to 1880 or so, during the time Russell played to sold-out crowds in theaters and opera houses. The broach is 2 3/4 inches long and 2 3/8 inches wide. Considering the item's age, it is in truly remarkable condition. There is some slight chips on the hand-painted ceramic, but it is nothing that interferes with the portrait itself and are surface chips only. The side mounting is copper, and as a soft metal, shows wear from handling, but it is still solid all the way around the broach. Similarly, the broach's pin is unbent and fully functional. For lover's of showbiz memorabilia and especially for fans of this legendary personality, this broach is a prime collector's item.
