Description: This is a wooden mask handmade in the Okayama region of Japan. These masks (kagura) are used in traditional art performances across Japan. I believe it is considered a Noh or Kabuki mask intended for theater performances. It includes large areas with inset hair (appears to be horse hair). It is signed on the back with the name and location of the maker: Nakayama Gousan from Bitchu (now in Okayama Prefecture.) Condition is good but mask has scratches/cosmetic wear and tear to the paint. No chips or cracks in the wood. No problems with the horse hair. The string is tattered. Please see close up photos for more details.
