This primitive hooded butter mold were the basic workhorses of the buttery. This mold was made entirely from wood held together with no nail construction. Natural colored hard wood, I believe Maple, hand carved wooden butter stamp from the 1870s -1890s. This butter press is in good condition for it's age, with normal age related wear. Could use a cleaning from decades of non use, I have not attempted to clean this utensil. These butter molds are in "as found" condition. I prefer to leave the cleaning / polishing to the discretion of the buyer. There are two thin age cracks or splits, and some staining. Comes with a nice "age and use" patina. Overall, it is a great primitive collectible piece of Americana. Inner plunger measures 3-1/2" diameter, by 5-1/4" tall to the top of the plunger.The outer mold stands 3-5/8 " tall by 4-3/4" diameter by 3-3/4" across at top. Butter molds were used by women in households between the 17th-19th centuries. The mold emblazoned on the butter was specific to each woman so everyone knew whose butter was being sold or gifted. The stamp was symbolic of the pride women placed in their craft. These are hard to come by, and even harder to find in such good condition.
