Antique HOBBS Blue Opalescent Stars and Stripes Lamp Shade VERY RARE #230

Description: This extremely rare blue opalescent lamp shade was featured in the 1891 Catalog of Hobbs Glass Company located in Wheeling, West Virginia. A reprint from the catalog showing a black and white drawing of the shade is also on page 18 of Victorian Colored Pattern Glass Book 9 Cranberry Opalescent from A to Z by William Heacock & William Gamble. In the same book Gamble writes, "I have never seen a lamp shade other than in a catalog reprint. I am certain it has never been remade. It would certainly be one of the rarest pieces to find in OPAL STARTS AND STRIPES." This lamp shade is a stunning piece of early American made glass. It is a beautiful sky blue color with very pale blue, almost white, stars and stripes. The glass is sparkling clear with no residue or scratches. The stars seem to pop out of the glass in 3 dimension. The top rim of the shade is ground and has some roughness around the edge as does the bottom opening rim. This is to be expected from a shade this of this age. There is also a 1/4" nick on the outside of the lower rim where it would have been fitted into a metal holder and a 1/4" round air bubble on the inside of the shade. These two details are shown on the final 2 photos on this listing and, again not unusual in very old glass. The shade is 4.75" high, has a 6" opening on top and a 4.25" opening in the bottom. The bottom edge flares out to 5" on the outside. This stars and strips lamp shade was also made by Hobbs in Cranberry Opalescent.
