Description: This is a marvellous Antique Richter’s Anchor Stone Building Blocks Construction Set 6, made c1905. It appears complete with the stone blocks matching up with the design layout on the reverse of the lid to the box, although 6 pieces which should be the tan colour are in red. Included are a set of black & white photocopied instructional booklets ranging from sets 2-12. Of course, construction sets not related to this set of blocks detailed in these books will require additional sets to make them up. The blocks are in good condition but do exhibit some age-related wear from use and storage, which includes some rubbing, chipping and surface wear, which is to be expected for a piece of this age. The box is also in good condition, but again exhibits some age-related wear from handling and storage. The box measures approximately 32.5cm wide, 22cm deep and 5cm high. Richter's blocks saw inspiration from Friedrich Frobel, the creator of the wooden block Kindergarten system of education. Anchor stones were first produced by Otto Lillenthal and his brother Gustav with the wealthy businessman Friedrich Adolf Richter buying the rights for these designs in 1880 and producing them, with great success. Anchor Stone pieces are made of a mixture of quartz sand, chalk and linseed oil, precisely pressed to the required sizes so that they stack correctly together. The stone comes in three colours in imitation of the red brick, tan limestone and blue slate of European buildings. Note: They are not recommended for play by children under 3 years of age due to the materials used, their small sizes and shapes used. These are more of a collectors’ piece these days so if to be used by older children we would recommend them being used under supervision.
