Description: For sale is a rare to find antique ice axe/chopper, weighing 15 ounces. Signed "George Washington's Warranted Cast Steel Empire Port Forge Co.", it has a 6-3/4" long head, with a 4-1/8" rough and chipped edge, with four teeth measuring 2-3/16" wide overall at their tips. it measures 6-3/16" long with a 3-3/4" wide edge, a 1" wide X 2-5/8" poll, or end, and a 5/8" X 2" eye. The 13-7/8" wooden handle is sound, solid, and original. A internet search reveals that the Empire Portable Forge Co. was established by Warren T. Kellogg around 1874 in the area of Troy, New York. In 1877 it was relocated to Cohoes, New York, and in 1890 to Lansingburg, New York, where it remained in business until around 1899. This is a nice overall rare to find example from a maker that was only i business for about 25 years.
