Description: This artwork by Paul Louis Cyfflé called "Ravaudeuse" displays its beauty in its simplicity through the use of the unglazed French Bisque porcelain that Paul Louis Cyfflé was known to have used--a material specifically called "Grés." The history of grés porcelain has very ancient roots and is characterized by many theories that tell why this material was conceived. However, it is generally believed that grés was discovered in a search for a material that could be both beautiful and strong. More specifically, this material belongs to the family of ceramics that results from a complex processing that blends clay, ceramic, feldspar, kaolin and sand to create a mix that is baked at an extremely high temperature. (Taken from a Google source.) This particular sculpture is signed by Cyfflé and numbered 116, and also has a hand-written "identifier"--Grés Mougin Nancy--along with the stamped MOUGIN NANCY mark. (See photos) This piece is 9 inches tall and 6.5 inches wide. (Worth noting is that a glazed and colored version of this particular design exists, as well. It was not unusual for Cyfflé to create both styles of finish. Both styles are very rare. See last photo included in listing.)
