ANTIQUE FRENCH COUNTRY TAPESTRY ROCOCO CARVED WOOD FOLDING DRESSING SCREEN BATH

Description: This is a fine and rare smaller 2 panel privacy or decorative folding screen with original fabric. The frame was hand-carved and gilded in gold, of which there are only traces left. The carved detail is relatively understated and the c-scrolls and curves of the frame itself are particularly pleasing to the eye, not being too fussy or crowded with detail. This understatement of form seems, to me, evocative of the country life in France, while the red cupid-crowding of the tapestry in front (or rear) is more evocative of decadent Paris. I am not sure that this red fabric is original or was replaced later in the 19th century, but the fabric on the other side is most likely original to the screen (see last 2 photos). I think the screen was made at the end of the 18th century or early in the 19th century in France, and surely made for a smaller space like so many of the smaller apartments in Paris and virtually every city in France. There is a small chip of wood gone from one side (with the plainer fabric) down at floor level (not enough photos to show, but it is not an issue for structure or appearance), and there is a very stable crack in one pane of glass (this piece of glass was cracked when I purchased the screen over 30 years ago; it has never moved and I have never felt the need to replace it).
