Description: Antique French Choisy-le-Roi Porcelain Plate, Signed and Numbered, The Hangman of Tunis, Tunisia, 19th century This antique French porcelain plate bears the embossed mark “V6”, signifying the date of manufacture, the embossed hallmark “HB & Cie. Choisy” and the impressed hallmark “Médailles d’Or. H.B. & Cie. Choisy-le-Roi”, all marks used by the Faïenceries de Choisy-le-Roi in the last quarter of the 19th century. The Faïenceries de Choisy-le-Roi, founded in 1804 in Choisy, near Paris, were bought in 1863 by Hippolyte Boulanger who gave his initials, “HB”, to the company’s mark. Boulanger enlarged the workshops, greatly increased production and twenty five years later moved the headquarters to the rue de Paradis in Paris. He employed professional illustrators for his printed faience, especially for the very fashionable series of “talking plates” (“assiettes parlantes”) that he produced. This particular plate is the fifth in a series on Tunisia and the central scene, in “grisaille”, is entitled, “5. L’Exécuteur des hautes œuvres à Tunis” (5. The hangman of Tunis). A violet colored border alternates portraits of Tunisians and scenes of Tunisia in medallions surrounded by leaves and garlands. This plate is in excellent condition and will bring a handsome bit of 19th century French design into your decor and would be an excellent addition to your collection.
