Description: Beautiful "One of a Kind" ART Rare antique FRENCH Woodblock Architectural ART Wallpaper press, entitled "les Cercles," with Certificate & Frame We are proud to offer this VERY RARE and BEAUTIFUL Antique French Woodblock that was made for Wallpaper production, probably designed by or after French designer Joseph Dufour et Cie (founded 1797). This "ONE OF A KIND" Framed antique ART will look wonderfully dramatic in your Home, Office or Museum. This framed ART is a lovely, deep natural brown wood with meticulous hand-carved gorgeous circular designs...it is in superb condition, a unique piece of high quality Art... This "One Of A Kind" Woodblock is one of the Finest in quality of this vintage. This special French Woodblock Art has been registered with the NATIONAL FINE ARTS TITLE REGISTRATION under the title, "les Cercles." You receive this original Certificate and Provenance with the framed art. "les Cercles" This Rare Woodbock Framed ART measures approximately 10" x 10" x 2"...25.4 cm x& 25.4 cm x 5.08 cm. It is mounted inside a deep black shadowbox with a glass front & just ready to hang on the wall... It has these carved handles on 2 sides that were used to press this into the paper or cloth to produce the designer wall paper in France... ...and this number stamped on the side of the woodblock. Finally, it is marked MADE IN FRANCE Woodblock printing on wallpaper became famous in France at the end of the 18th century. Manufactures like Joseph Dufour et Cie (1797 - c. 1830) or Zuber et Cie (founded 1797) used the woodblock printing for wall paper production. In 1806, in collaboration with the artist Jean-Gabriel Charvet, Dufour et Cie produced a twenty-panel set of scenic wallpaper entitled Sauvages de la Mer du Pacifique (Savages of the Pacific), which became very famous. It was the largest panoramic wallpaper of its time, and marked the burgeoning of a French industry in panoramic wallpapers. Dufour realized almost immediate success from the sale of these papers and enjoyed a lively trade with America. The Neoclassic spirit currently in favor was accented handsomely in houses of the Federal period by the exaggerated elegance of Charvet's scenes. Like most of 18th century wallpapers, the panorama was designed to be hung above a dado. While Joseph Dufour et Cie was shut down in the 1830's Zuber et Cie is still existing and claims to be the last factory in the world to produce woodblock printed wallpapers and furnishing fabrics. For its production Zuber uses woodblocks out of an archive of more than 100,000 engraved from the 17th and 19th century which are classified as a "Historical Monument." It offers panoramic sceneries such as "Vue de l'Amérique Nord", "Eldorado Hindoustan" or "Isola Bella" and also wallpapers, friezes and ceilings as well as hand-printed furnishing fabrics....and comes in a nice black FRAME. This technique was used into the 20th Century on paper and fabrics. This Rare French WOODBLOCK is of superb quality and patina. This is the kind of classic ART that gets handed down through generations and is a "One of a Kind" find. A GREAT GIFT!!!!
