Description: Flint Faience & Tile Co., Flint, MI 1921-1933 Flint Faience was founded as a subsidiary of the A.C. Spark Plug Company and General Motors. Flint tiles were exceedingly high quality and were exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and used in prestigious installations, including the Presidential Palace of Peru. This Flint Mayan Face tile depicts a woman wearing a headdress framed with a black border and glazed in harmonious shades of teal, indigo, ochre, umber, and pearl. This chunky little tile affords a concise study of polychrome glazing and strong design and is pictured on P.238 of Norman Karlson’s Encyclopedia of American Art Tile. 3 1/2″ square x 3/4″ thick. Tile has a chip on the rear and 2 small chips in the glaze on the left side. Tile has never been set or used. Sold as is no returns.
